Our history

American Modern has changed a lot over the years – starting out over 75 years ago as The Midland Company and now part of Munich Re, the organization has a history of taking advantage of opportunities to grow its business and become a leading specialty lines insurance carrier. Select milestones of our history can be found here.
1930 - 1960
Starting out by providing personal financing for automobile purchases, the company decides to become one of the first to specialize in financing manufactured homes when the housing units become popular.
1960 - 1980
Building on the success in mobile home financing, the company enters the mobile home insurance market and establishes American Modern Home Insurance Company and American Family Home Insurance Company. After briefly adding manufacturing to its business model, the recession causes the company to pull back and focus only on its insurance operations.
1990-2000
The corporation diversifies its insurance product lineup and adds watercraft, collector car, motorcycle, ATV and snowmobile. In 1994, American Modern Insurance Group, Inc. is formed.
2008
American Modern is purchased by Munich Re in a strategic move by the reinsurance carrier to diversify its business and expand into the primary insurance marketplace.
2013
American Modern embarks upon a business transformation project that touches nearly every aspect of its operations, with the goal of replacing a disjointed IT landscape and revamping its fragmented product lines.
2014
American Modern receives recognition as a Top Workplace in the Greater Cincinnati region – an award the company has consistently won every year since.
2023
American Modern receives recognition from Forbes as a Best Midsize Employer 2023.
